How to rank in Gemini and Google AI Overviews
Gemini is built into Android and Google's apps, so for many buyers it's the first AI they meet on their phone. Here's how it chooses brands, based on our own tests, and what to do to be recommended more often.
Gemini recommends brands it already "knows" from across the web, and, for some questions, brands that rank well in Google Search. So you need two things: a broad, consistent presence in trusted sources over time, and strong, direct answers to buyer questions that Google can find. In categories like electronics and home appliances, YouTube matters too.
What our data shows about Gemini
We asked Gemini 270 questions that Indian buyers ask, across 8 categories, three times each (810 answers), in September 2026:
- Gemini names many brands. 6.7 per beauty answer on average, versus 1.7 for ChatGPT. Being mentioned is easier on Gemini; being mentioned first is the real prize.
- It often answers from memory. Gemini searched Google in about 20% of answers overall, but 72% for electronics and 39% for home appliances, and only about 7% for beauty.
- YouTube is a major source. When Gemini searched, YouTube was the top source for electronics, home and health questions.
- Language changes the answer. For "best laptop for students", Gemini named Lenovo first in English and Apple first in Hindi.
How to get recommended by Gemini
1. Measure your Gemini share first

2. Build a presence Gemini already knows
For categories where Gemini answers from memory, like beauty, the brands it names are the ones widely discussed across trusted sources over time: expert reviews, publications, comparison articles and communities. Consistent coverage beats one-off campaigns.
3. Win the Google results Gemini reads
For categories where Gemini searches, classic SEO matters: pages that directly answer "best X for Y" questions, with clear headings, specifics and prices, and structured data such as Product and FAQ markup.
4. Invest in YouTube for considered purchases
Product videos and creator reviews with clear titles ("best washing machine under $600") are cited heavily for electronics, home and health.
5. Keep your brand facts consistent
Use the same brand name, category and key facts on your site, marketplaces, Google Business Profile and product feeds. Conflicting information makes AI less confident.
6. Cover every country and language you sell in
Gemini's answers can change with where the buyer is and the language they ask in, so check your questions in each country you sell in. In India, where Gemini ships on most Android phones, Hindi product pages and FAQs help you show up when buyers ask in Hindi. See our Hindi AI search guide.
7. Track the same questions monthly
Gemini's answers change as it updates. Re-check on a schedule to see what's working.
What about Google AI Overviews?
AI Overviews are AI-written summaries shown above some Google results. They're built from web pages, so the same foundations apply: be indexed, answer the question directly near the top of the page, use clear structure and structured data, and earn mentions on the sites that already rank for your buyer questions.
Frequently asked questions
How does Gemini decide which brands to recommend?
Gemini draws on what it learned during training and, for some questions, on live Google Search results. In our tests it searched the web in about 20% of answers overall, much more for electronics and home appliances, so both your long-term web presence and your current search visibility matter.
Is ranking in AI Overviews the same as ranking in Gemini?
They're related but not the same. AI Overviews appear inside Google Search and draw on web pages; the Gemini app answers in a conversation and often from its own knowledge. Strong SEO and clear answers help with both.
Does YouTube help with Gemini?
In our September 2026 data, when Gemini searched the web, YouTube was the top source for electronics, home appliances and health questions. Clear, well-titled product videos and creator reviews are worth the effort in those categories.
