How to get your brand recommended by ChatGPT and Gemini

A practical guide to generative engine optimization (GEO), with data from over 1,000 AI answers we collected in September 2026.

The short answer

ChatGPT and Gemini recommend the brands that trusted sources consistently mention for a specific buyer question. You can't pay for a place. To get recommended: measure where you stand, answer the exact questions buyers ask on your own site, get into the sources AI reads, keep your brand facts consistent, cover the countries and languages your buyers use, and track the results every month.

What GEO and AEO mean

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of getting your brand into answers written by AI tools such as ChatGPT and Gemini. Answer engine optimization (AEO) is closely related: it means writing content that AI can quote directly, with clear questions and short answers. Both differ from classic SEO in one important way. Google shows ten links; an AI assistant writes one answer and names a few brands. Being on page one isn't enough if you're not in the answer.

How ChatGPT and Gemini choose which brands to recommend

In September 2026 we asked Gemini 270 real questions that Indian buyers ask, across 8 categories, each three times, in English, Hinglish and Hindi, and asked ChatGPT the same questions for beauty and business software. Three patterns stood out:

7 steps to get your brand recommended by ChatGPT

1. Measure your AI shelf share first

Before changing anything, find out how often AI names you today, which competitors it prefers and on which questions. Without a baseline you can't tell whether anything worked. A free AI visibility check takes about two minutes.

2. Find the exact questions you're missing

List the questions buyers ask before choosing a product like yours: "best X for Y", "X under $50", "X vs Y", "is X good for Z". Then check which of them AI answers without naming you. These gaps are your to-do list.

3. Answer those questions on your own website

Create pages that answer each question directly. Start with a one-sentence answer, then give specifics AI can quote: who the product is for, key features, price in your buyers' currency, sizes, ingredients or specs. Use clear headings, a short FAQ and structured data. Plain, factual pages are easier for AI to use than clever marketing copy.

4. Get into the sources AI reads

AI recommends brands that many trusted sources agree on. Work on the places it quotes in your category: review round-ups and "best of" articles, expert and publication coverage, YouTube reviews, community discussions, and marketplace listings with clear titles and "best for" wording.

5. Keep your brand facts consistent everywhere

Use the same brand name, category description, prices and key claims on your site, marketplaces, social profiles and press coverage. Conflicting facts make AI less confident about recommending you.

6. Cover every country and language your buyers use

AI answers can change with where the buyer is and the language they ask in, so check your questions in each country you sell in. In India, ask in Hindi and Hinglish too: in our research the brand named first sometimes changed with the language, and Hindi product pages and FAQs can win answers your competitors miss.

7. Track the same questions every month

AI answers change constantly. Re-check the same questions on a schedule, so you can see which fixes moved your numbers and spot a competitor catching up early.

Three myths to ignore

Frequently asked questions

Can you pay ChatGPT to recommend your brand?

No. ChatGPT's organic answers are not for sale. Brands are recommended when trusted sources consistently mention them for the question being asked.

What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of making your brand appear in answers written by AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini. It covers the content on your own site, the third-party sources AI reads, and measuring how often AI names you.

What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?

Answer engine optimization (AEO) means structuring your content so that AI assistants and answer boxes can quote it directly: clear questions, short direct answers and consistent facts. It overlaps heavily with GEO.

How long does it take to show up in ChatGPT answers?

It varies. Changes to your own pages can be picked up when AI searches the web, while earning mentions in reviews and articles takes longer. That's why we re-check the same questions every month.

Does ranking #1 on Google mean ChatGPT will recommend you?

Not necessarily. Google ranks pages; AI writes one answer from several sources and often names brands that appear consistently across them. You need to measure AI answers directly.
