Hindi and Hinglish AI search: is AI recommending your brand?

Hundreds of millions of Indians think and search in Hindi or Hinglish. When they ask AI what to buy, the answer can name different brands than in English. Here's what we found and what to do about it.

Three ways to ask the same question

LanguageQuestion
Englishbest sunscreen for oily skin in India
Hinglishoily skin ke liye best sunscreen kaunsa hai
Hindiतैलीय त्वचा के लिए सबसे अच्छा सनस्क्रीन कौन सा है?

What changes between languages

Most top brands were the same in every language. But for some questions, the brand Gemini named first changed. In each case below, the same brand was named first in all three answers in that language:

Question (Gemini)Named first in EnglishNamed first in Hindi
Best GST accounting softwareZohoTallyPrime
Best app for UPSC preparationVision IASDrishti IAS
Best laptop for studentsLenovoApple
Best app to book hotelsMakeMyTripBooking.com
Best moisturiser for dry skinBiodermaCetaphil

Each finding is based on 3 answers per language per question, so treat them as early signals. We re-check monthly in the AI Shelf Index.

Why this happens

AI answers in a language draw on what's written in that language. If the Hindi web talks about different brands, through Hindi media, creators or forums, the Hindi answer reflects that. A brand that's strong in English content can be much weaker in Hindi.

Frequently asked questions

Does ChatGPT recommend different brands in Hindi?

Sometimes. In our September 2026 tests on Gemini, most top brands were the same across languages, but for some questions the brand named first changed between English and Hindi, and some brands appeared only in Hindi answers.

How do I get my brand into Hindi AI answers?

Publish Hindi product pages and FAQs, keep your brand name spelled consistently in Devanagari, work with Hindi and Hinglish creators, and seek coverage in Hindi media. Then track Hindi questions separately.

Should I track Hinglish separately from Hindi?

Yes. Hinglish questions are written in Latin script but phrased like spoken Hindi, and AI can treat them differently from both English and Hindi.
