What is AI share of voice, and how do you measure it?

AI share of voice tells you how often ChatGPT, Gemini and other AI assistants recommend your brand compared with your competitors. Here's the formula, how to measure it properly, and what good looks like.

The short answer

AI share of voice = answers that mention your brand ÷ total AI answers × 100, measured across the real questions your buyers ask, asked several times on each AI. At AnswerShelf we call this your AI shelf share.

AI share of voice, defined

Traditional share of voice compares your ads or search rankings with competitors'. AI share of voice does the same for AI answers. When a buyer asks "best CRM for small business", the AI names a few brands. Your share of voice is how often you're one of them.

There are two common ways to calculate it:

A worked example

You pick 50 buyer questions, ask each on ChatGPT and Gemini, three times each. That's 300 answers. Your brand appears in 45 of them, so your AI share of voice is 45 ÷ 300 = 15%. If your main competitor appears in 120 answers, they hold 40%. That 25-point gap is the number to close.

How to measure AI share of voice properly

1. Use real buyer questions, not your brand name

Buyers ask "best sunscreen for oily skin", not "is Brand X good". Build questions around each product need in your category: best-for, under a price, comparisons, and use cases.

2. Ask each question more than once

AI answers vary from one try to the next. A single screenshot can make you look much better or worse than you are. Ask each question several times and average the results.

3. Cover every AI, country and language your buyers use

AIs behave very differently. In our AI Shelf Index, ChatGPT named 1.7 brands per beauty answer while Gemini named 6.7, so share of voice on ChatGPT is far more concentrated. Answers can also change with the buyer's country and language: ask from each market you sell in, and in India, in Hindi and Hinglish too.

4. Count brands carefully

Brands appear with different spellings, abbreviations and scripts. Match every variant, including other scripts such as Devanagari, or you'll undercount.

5. Track the same questions over time

Share of voice matters most as a trend. Re-run the same questions monthly or weekly to see what moved after each change.

Frequently asked questions

What is AI share of voice?

AI share of voice is how often AI assistants mention your brand compared with competitors, across the questions your buyers ask. It's usually measured as the share of AI answers that mention your brand.

How do you calculate AI share of voice?

Ask a set of buyer questions several times on each AI, then divide the number of answers that mention your brand by the total number of answers, and multiply by 100. For example, 45 mentions in 300 answers is a 15% share.

What is a good AI share of voice?

It depends on the category. In our September 2026 India index, category leaders appeared in 29% to 71% of Gemini's answers, while 7 in 10 brands that Gemini named appeared in under 10%.

Is AI share of voice the same as AI visibility?

They're closely related. AI visibility is the broad idea of how present your brand is in AI answers; share of voice is one way to measure it against competitors. AnswerShelf calls its version AI shelf share.
